I have been working hard the past few weeks to get what we have been calling "the red house" in shape for a renter. The house belongs to my in-laws and has been used for years by my brother-in-law. But recent life events have taken him to other places and it was time for an update. I was called in to help with paint colors and general updates for the house.

The goal: to make it brighter and add a modern touch for a young family. A lot of painting had to be done, ceilings and trim were painted in white and the kitchen cabinets were painted in white as well. A dishwasher was added, the washer and dryer relocated to the garage and an island brought into the kitchen. The biggest change was removing a bad addition to the back porch. The house has been returned to it's original 1950's glory. It makes me feel good that we have provided a safe and bright home for a family to enjoy. In only 3 weeks the house has been transformed.
My mother-in-law, is an artist and designer in her own right. She has no formal education in art or design, but the way she puts things together is just spot on, I really wanted to share it here.

The living room furniture was purchased at a local consignment shop and came from a model home. I love that she uses second hand furniture, antiques, vintage and even re-upholster's items. This speaks to my heart for vintage and for re-use. I worked with her to add the curtains. Giving her some needed privacy in the evenings and dressing up the room a bit more. Next on her to-do list is a new rug. I can't wait to see how it transforms the space.

Upstairs in one of the bedrooms, I assisted her in choosing a paint color that really warmed up the space and gave it a completely different feel from the cream of the rest of the house. Then I found this great striped blue linen fabric that I made into curtains for her. After that she did the rest. She shopped for the accessories, found the incredible deer pillows and gave the room this eclectic industrial meets the pacific northwest beach feel. And the mix of unique vintage items, the industrial sign and letters liven up the space in a way I just don't see very often. It's no mistake this woman is my mother-in law, don't you think?

As this new year dawns I finally feel an intense feeling of freedom and gratitude. It's taken a lot of listening to and following the advice of a trusted mentor to get here. It's meant cleaning up the past and changing my thinking. Throughout this process I have put so many other things on hold. Like writing here on this blog. Like my dreams of an interior design business. Like selling on Etsy on a regular basis. Big life goals I want to get back to.

Little goals must be met along the way and one of those smaller goals is picking up my neglected camera and using it again. I decided to break it out for our family day up at Mt. Hood. It felt so good to use it again. To fuss with the settings, having very little idea what I was doing, but doing it nonetheless. To take imperfect photos from awkward angles and show them to you here. Because there is a freedom in just trying and being you, no matter how imperfect.

Sledding, snow and smiles were the theme of the day. Pure joy was found in the simple pleasure of a snowy hill to slide down. Henry would laugh with excitement and joy as he came down the small slope. Other people would crash and he would tell them "You're silly!" then laugh at them, like my dad and I don't crash, what's up with you? But that was there way of having fun, to be messy and crash. The truth is, we all crash in life, it's whether we get up and climb the hill to try again or get up and go home that matters. I can already tell that I'm ready to keep getting up no matter how many times I fall and crash. Bring on the new year, I'm ready for you.

I've been busy around here, trying to finish up projects, run after my two and half year old and grow a new baby in my belly! The baby in my belly and the very busy two year old have kept me so pre-occupied I feel like I barely have time to breath.

I was excited to attend a local meeting put on by the women of H-ROC. It's a local non-partisan political action group that formed in the last two years to get more women to become leaders in politics. How cool is that? The topic of the meeting I attended was "Can Women Have it All?".

We first discussed what that even means, to "have it all". For instance, I noticed that I live under the idea that I must have the kids, husband, house, job and stuff AND, by the way, everyone should be happy! Yikes! What a momentous idea that sets me up for failure. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from women who are working and enjoying their children and families. (Keep it simple) But the most important thing I heard was that we have to stick together. Too often women compete against each other when it should be the exact opposite, we should be working together to help each other become successful. I can think of a few women in my life that I want to support, maybe help watch their kids, encourage their dreams, be positive and never critical or sarcastic.

Just start, just start, just start, these words have been echoing in my head these past few weeks. Things pop up repeatedly when the universe is trying to tell me something. I was reading a blog and came across this graphic art print that says "Just Start". Earlier this week I was at a meeting where the the topic was procrastination and this wise gentlemen said "Ready, Fire, Aim!". In other words, everything doesn't have to be perfect for me to start. And starting my journey has nothing to do with where I will end up. It's only important to start.

I've taken such a long break from my business and my blog that I feel a bit lost. I've gotten caught up in the daily to do's of being a mommy to a very busy two year old that I haven't allowed myself the time or space to do the things I love. When this whole time all I needed to do was just show up. That's what hundreds of thousands of moms do every day. They get out of bed and they take care of their kids and they go to work. And maybe my work doesn't look like everyone else's but what's important is that I show up and do the next right thing. Whatever it is I can do today, then I do that thing. Whatever I can't do, I ask for help. This is so simple it kills me!

So here I am, beginning again. I have so much to share with you, a bathroom remodel, updating a staircase and another pink office! It's not like I have been sitting around eating bon bons every day. Do they still make those things? Does anyone eat them?

Until next time....

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm excited to report that I'm taking these tiny baby steps towards launching my little interior design business. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm currently on the search for a photographer to take some professional photos too. But I did read once that this successful designer got started with just a website and some photos right out of design school. I was encouraged to hear that. I have my years of working for a small company behind me as well as lots of friends in the design community. So I feel that I have so much support. I'm looking forward to what the future holds.
Bend is an amazing little spot, it's hot and dry, with a vibrant downtown, good shopping, river activities and lots of amazing real estate. It reminds me of Palm Springs, without the celebrities.

I came across this new neighborhood and the modern in me got really excited. This was the most immaculate neighborhood I've ever seen. It is almost too perfectly Stepford, however, I saw a few people and they seemed real. Every garage is behind the house, no parking signs are posted everywhere and they have community mailboxes. These things are so opposite of my neighborhood with it's telephone wires and mismatched assortment of mailboxes, a bus in one neighbor's front yard (yes, literally a bus!) ugh, I could go on and on. Let's just look at this amazing dreamland of total perfection, craftsmen loveliness and modern fabulousness! On with it!

My favorite one. It's a combination of modern and vintage. Reminded me of the 1950's, built for today. The home owner was standing in the front room, looking at me like I was nuts. I must have looked that way while I was driving around doing this (with my child asleep in his car seat) sticking my head out the window snapping photos.

This house was stunning in person. It's across the street from the one in the photo above. I love the way the lines are so clean and stacked, it just belongs in it's environment. The way the earth is built, in layers, so should the architecture that exists upon it. My architecture thought for the day. You're welcome.

Quite a few of the modern homes had a side entry. This is a feature created by Frank Lloyd Wright and one that I wish I saw more of in our modern homes. We need to be building more homes like this one. What do you think?

The owner came to me because she wanted a "Hollywood Regency" style for her salon, named Glitterati. Her logo is pink and I immediately knew she needed gold in there! I have had such a blast putting it together for her, but there have been some serious down times as well. Like when we pulled up the carpet to discover black tar, the budget just wasn't going to supply us with flooring to cover that, it had to be scraped off. It was a difficult moment. But lots of sweat and tears later and now we have a beautiful painted concrete floor.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">12 inch black and white stripes that make an oversize chevron now adorn the floors. I can't tell you what an amazing difference this made in the space. It was all DIY. Her dad helped us lay out the design and gave us his "pro tips" on using the blue tape to make the lines. I got down on my hands and knees and helped layout all the measurements. Then the owner and a friend painted at night after her kids were in bed. The floors really make a statement and the days and nights of work really paid off.

I thought today I would share with you a fun vintage find. I slammed on my breaks and threw my car into reverse when I saw this whole vintage set of mid-century modern patio chairs just lounging on a neighbors yard.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I had not planned on buying this, but it was there. Calling to me. The whole set was purchased in 1955 from a store in Seattle. John, the seller, was nine years old when his parents brought this home. He has kept it all this time. It's in mint condition and looks shiny and new in our backyard.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It's been a while and I'm happy to report that I have been busy with some new projects! I'm so excited to share them with you as they come to a close. I've also made some changes around the Busick house and next month we are scheduled for a bit of a remodel. All due to the fact that we found dry rot on the back of the house. Because if someone is going to tear apart my roof, wellll, then can we change a few things upstairs? Have I shown you the exterior of my house?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is the house in winter, when we first bought it, with that ugly color on the front door and garage.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Here is the house in summer, after we painted the front door and garage a turquoise color. We had just planted new grass, installed new modern house numbers, and replaced the brass letter slot in the front door with a vintage decorative antique <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">brass plate. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> We also painted the steps of the porch a rich chocolate color. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">These were all affordable changes that made a big difference to us.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Here is a close up of the antique brass plate that replaced the shiny brass envelope slot on the front door.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The exterior of my house continues to bother me. Which means something just isn't right. For instance the flower bed in front of the living room window continues to be incomplete, I can't get anything to survive there. I wish I could just replace it with a porch. Wouldn't that be fun?
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We are considering adding another pop out window to the other side of the house and extending the roof line over the edge of the house. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I want to paint the whole house a dark grey with white trim. That could really freshen it up. Imagine making the trim around the windows really thick. I think that could be a more modern update that could keep me from adding the typical awnings, shutters and flower boxes. Maybe I'm living in the wrong style of house for my taste? I just believe everything old can be new again as long as you add some modern to it.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">What do you think?
Dahlings,

I came across a fabulous little autobiography by Tullalah Bankhead. I'm completely smitten and from now on, wish to address you all as Dahling!

I adore this little book, every time I pick it up and read a little, I smile. Tullaluh Bankhead was a professional actress who in her words, "loathed acting" but desired fame, carried a parakeet named Gaylord with her wherever she went, married once and didn't apologize for her free and lively spirit.

She grew up in Alabama and swears it was her name that allowed her to escape the place, although she was heckled for it as a child.

Raised by Aunt Louise and Aunt Marie, her father and grandparents after the death of her mother when she was born. Her father was elected to the House of Representatives in 1916 when she was 14 years old. It was her father that supported her future as an actor because of his own desire to be one. An entry into a beauty contest would take her to New York where she pursued the fame that she so desired. She acted on stage, radio and eventually television and film. I've caught her on an old rerun of I Love Lucy. She had a sort of rough nasal voice, and a true air of sophistication.

She referred to everyone as dahling, saying, "Dahling has implications of affection, or at least friendliness. It cannot disturb the recipient." I couldn't agree more.

Tullalah ends this little memoir with the following words, "By my own standards I've lived to the hilt. I've soared in the clouds and touched bottom. Much as I like to idle, I know I must carry on or perish. I have a tiger by the tail. Better than anyone, Edna St. Vincent Millay has expressed my plight, my philosophy:

My candle burns at both ends;

It will not last the night:

But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends,

It gives a lovely light."

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This past weekend I traveled with my parents and Hank to Milpitas, California. It was to say goodbye to my Great-Grandmother Catherine, whom we lovingly called Kay. In order to remember her and all that she gave to us, we exchanged photos of her and her beloved family.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">These are her three daughters in 1937, from left, Betty, Joan and Renee (my grandmother).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On the back of this photo is written:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Renee- Dress- Lavender

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Joan - Dress- Pink

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Betty - Dress- Blue

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Most mothers write the age of their children on the back of photos, but not Grandma Kay. She wrote what color the dresses were because it was an important detail. I love this about her. So stink'n cute!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Here is the whole family. The hair, the clothes, a very young Great-Grandma Kay, makes me smile. And if those curtains were flocked and in a deep jewel tone they would make some fabulous vintage modern curtains. Don't you think? Also her husband, Grandpa Christiansen as my mother often referred to him, was a great guy, a very hands on father whom Kay never stopped loving or missing even when though he passed away in the early 70's.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is a picture of a moment I wish I could go back to. A gorgeous sunny day and a visit to the city of San Francisco with Great-Grandma Kay.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So much of who she was will live on in her many grandchildren. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In the end, amongst her family with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren present, we layed her body to rest next to the love of her life. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Some of my very favorite pieces in my wardrobe are hand-me-downs. Being in the vintage clothing business means I have zero aversion to pre-loved things, and my favorites are items that are really infused with love! I've mentioned before that my mom saved a lot of her wardrobe and let me wear it in my own youth. There are several things that I still use and wear quite often, and I think it's noteworthy that they are the pieces mom is wearing in numerous photos I have of her. Great accessories usually stand the test of time!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This cotton scarf is a good example. It's cotton and a versatile large size, in bright primary colors with paisley. Mom used it as a hair accessory throughout my infancy, and then gave it to me for one of my early Halloween costumes (I was Gypsy several years running, isn't this scarf perfect for that!?). I have always loved it, and find myself using it on many a bad hair day! Scarves are such a fun way to accessorize, and can really pull an outfit together by matching colors to the rest of your ensemble. I usually wear them casually, with jeans and a solid colored top of some sort. There are all sorts of ways to tie them up; YouTube tutorials abound. My favorite way is just how mom wore hers though, draped over the head and tied in back.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Another favorite accessory is a pair of 1970's enamel hoop earrings. They are the perfect shade of navy blue and pair well with vintage and contemporary outfits. In the included photos of my mom, you can see she is wearing them. I updated them a bit when she gave them to me, adding a medium sized bead and new posts. Some other favorites I get a lot of mileage out of are a pair of beautiful micro mosaic earrings and both of my parents class rings. I was thrilled when my mom gave me the rings a couple of years ago, I'd been admiring them in her jewelry box for as long as I can remember.

My Hank turned one year old on May 12th. That is one entire year that I have survived being a mother. One entire year of poopie diapers, holding him in the middle of the night when he cries, bath time, play time, hugging time and silly time. One entire year of learning what it means to give up my wants and desires to care for another person.

I figured that meant it was time for a party. My mom said, "don't make such a fuss, he'll never remember it". I felt like it didn't matter, I will always remember it. And maybe, just maybe, I needed it.

It all went off without a hitch as they say. It was sunny and 87 degrees out that day. Hank played with all of his cousins and friends, we sang happy birthday and received so many amazing presents. I'd say he is a very blessed little boy, or is it the other way around? I might say that it is him who blesses our lives every day, with his smiles and his hugs. His laughter and his cries. His silly faces and his "look out I'm coming through" mentality. Thank you God for Hank, who teaches me every day that the most important things in life are the people who love us.
I only had experiences working with latex paint. Latex paint washes off with water and generally doesn't have a bad odor. The oil based paint that I was just using is about the exact opposite of latex based paint. If it gets on your skin there is no washing it off with water and the smell, oh my, the smell!!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The reason for using an oil based paint was to paint a pair of chests for our bedroom. I know it will hold up and brace yourself, you can buy a small can of Rustoleum at Home Depot for about $9.50. They have some great basic colors.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My Tips for Using an Oil Based Paint on Furniture:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1. Even when the surface is smooth, use a soft roller brush, not one of those tight super smooth ones
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2. Wear gloves and if you get it on yourself use olive oil with sea salt to scrub it off. Follow up with dish soap to remove the oil.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3. Let it dry for a few days if you can. The smell is incredibly strong so let the furniture piece dry for a few days before you bring it inside the house.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">4. Be prepared for your brushes to get totally ruined, unless you dip them in the paint remover before you begin painting. Remember this paint doesn't just wash off.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Happy Painting!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Portland Spring weather is finally here, and that always puts me in the mood to wear dresses. Wearing vintage pretty much guarantees a few dresses in my closet, and if you don't have one yet for the warmer weather, that is a perfect excuse to try out a vintage one! Specifically the shirtwaist dress.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">One of my favorite styles of dress, a shirtwaist is pretty cut and dry. They borrow a little from menswear, while staying feminine. The tell-tale sign is a "shirt" like bodice featuring a buttoned front, cuffed sleeves, and sometimes a collar similar to a men's button up shirt. They have a tailored waist and always a full cut skirt that accommodates any size hips. Undeniably cute and extremely easy to wear. I own about a dozen!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Shirtwaist dresses are insanely versatile. Depending on your mood, they're easy to dress up or down for a more casual look. They look fantastic with flats, pretty sandals in the summer time, small heels (for dressing it up), or even cowboy boots! Throw a simple cardigan over one to keep it looking vintage, or a solid colored blazer and oxfords for an updated look. Many vintage ones you can find with their original belt, if not no problem. A skinny belt for the waist is readily available anywhere from Target to mall stores, in any size and color. I find that a belt subtly accents the shape of the dress on any body type, but it's not required. These dresses are all about your comfort zone, a big reason that I love them so much. You can find them in any size and just about any fabric too.... cotton, polyester, wool.... and any color or pattern. So fun! You'll find many for sale online (try Etsy & <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">eBay<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">), and I have never been in a vintage clothing shop that did not have a few to choose from.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I was on Craigslist a few weeks ago searching for a dresser for a client's guest room when I stumbled upon these large painted black mirrors. A matching set of mirrors was exactly what I had been wanting for our bedroom. You know, the Mint + Gold bedroom that I keep talking about.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">They were in terrible shape. The frames weren't attached to the mirrors and there was paint and icky stuff all over them. Two holes were apparent on the front of the frames too, all of this almost made me run. But I realized that this was nothing this crafty gal couldn't fix.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> I remembered a blog post by my DIY guru over at <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Little Green Notebook<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> for applying gold leaf to a picture frame.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Quick Overview:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 1. Clean the surface you are going to apply gold leaf to. IMPORTANT! If you have an old surface with lots of paint layers be sure to use a paint remover and take them off. If not, you will have a lot of problems with the product adhering to the surface. Fill in any random holes with wood filler. Sand and make sure the surface is dirt free. Mirrors are really easy to clean up with a little razor blade. I was able to get all of the paint and Lord knows what else off of these guys with a tiny little razor blade.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 2. Use the smaller blue handle brush above and apply the adhesive to the whole frame all at once. Allow to dry for 5 minutes.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 3. Start to apply the gold leaf sheets to the large flat surfaces while allowing the leaf to fall into the nooks and crannies. Use the black sponge brush to gently push away the excess gold leaf. Be sure to overlap the gold leaf so you don't end up with strange lines.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 4. Do any needed touch ups. I had to do a lot. I just applied more glue where needed, let dry and added more gold leaf.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 5. Dust off all excess gold leaf with black sponge brush.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Step 6. Clean off blue handle brush and use to apply the sealer to all of the gold leaf. Allow to dry for at least 20 minutes.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Finally, I had to go into Michael's for help with this frame as the mirror was not attached to the frame and there is a large space in between the two. $25 dollars later I learned that I could have just gone to a hardware store and picked up these brackets myself. It needed those metal brackets screwed into the frame. That was the only thing that would hold it in place. I added the wire, used a 50lb nail and hook and up they both went.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">What happens when you have the right style, the right price, the availability, but the wrong finish? You change it. It's so simple, I just had to share.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The actual hardware I used is from Home Depot, you can find it <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">here<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Let's get started by sanding the smooth finish so it's a little rough. Here is the sanding tool I used.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Next up, lay your hardware down on piece of clean cardboard. This is actually an important step, a clean surface is key. As is a can of Rustoleum spray paint. It's my favorite brand, it works the best and I can always find just the right color. I was a little nervous about this color, but there was no need to be.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Look at how fantastic it turned out! Even better in person and soon I will show you the finished look all pulled together.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Things have been very busy around here, it has been project on top of project. I am loving it. Nothing makes me happier than to pull together something I have been designing in my head. This week I will be sharing with you a pair of mirrors that I gilded, changing simple pulls from pewter to gold (it's easier than I thought), using oil based paint (holy cow! so different from latex paint) and I think I'm going to make all my pillows from now on using the envelope method (why haven't I done this before?).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The above bookshelf is one of my favorite pieces in our house. Mostly because I can do so many different things with it. I found that big globe on top on our trip to Lincoln City. I found it at the local Goodwill. I can't believe how many silly comments I received while I was walking around with it. I found some vintage post cards and I put them in little Ikea frames. Such a simple and cheap way to have some fun art. Then to keep things clean and modern, I stacked the books and added a mini vintage globe and coral. Finally, I picked up that white yarn hippopotamus at Target. All done! Now, I have a new look for my favorite piece of furniture and a design element that I enjoy seeing every day. See how easy that is?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Hello! My name is Christine, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I am excited to be here on my good friend Nicole's blog. Nicole and I both share an affinity for vintage home decor and clothing, and it just so happens that I own a vintage clothing shop in downtown Portland, Oregon called Living Threads Vintage. I will be doing a weekly guest post covering all things related to incorporating vintage into your wardrobe - it's much easier than you think, and I guarantee it to be fun.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I started wearing vintage clothing in the beginning of high school, when my mom let me dig into her saved garments from the 60's and 70's. Platform sandals? Bell bottoms? Leopard print lurex pants suits? Yes, my mother saved these things and yes, I wore them proudly as a teen. Rest assured, however, that along the years my wardrobe has tamed.

Similar to home decor, a good outfit (like a good room!) is often made by the extra little details.... so watch for lots of accessories too.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I'd like to introduce you to the life and style of Christine Taylor. A fellow vintage lover and collector, I have the privilege of calling her a friend and beginning tomorrow, the honor of having her as a weekly contributor here on Nicole B Vintage. Christine is the co-owner of a fabulous vintage clothing shop called <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Living Threads Vintage<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> in downtown Portland.
Christine's style is effortless, collected and original. I am so thrilled that she is going to share that here with us.
Mint plus Gold is so fresh. We painted our room and then I ran straight into a design dilemma. There were no modern curtain rods that came in gold. So I purchased some curtain rods in a sort of light silver thinking I wouldn't notice the difference. (I'm laughing at myself right now.) They drove me crazy how wrong they were. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I took down the rods and sprayed them white. Problem solved? Nope. I used Krylon spray paint and the paint just scraped off the minute I put the rods together. Feeling very very discouraged. I decided to pause. I knew I needed a brake from the project.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It has been months living with my DIY project gone wrong.
Have you noticed all of the Ikat patterns are so popular right now? There are so many new and modern versions that I am just loving.

My first Ikat purchase were these two pillows from an Etsy shop called East and Nest. They are beautifully made and give me that fresh graphic feel that I love, while being an Ikat. I had no idea it was possible. I do however, keep moving them from our bedroom to the guest room. As I can't decide which is my favorite. That's why pillows are so great for someone like me, easy to change!

My next Ikat purchase were these place mats from Target by Threshold. I am loving this new line of products by Threshold. They really freshen things up in my dining room while being completely practical. Love and love.

Now I'm wondering what my third Ikat purchase will be? Possibly curtains for the living room? We have had just plain white for a while now and I believe we need some pattern.

Did you notice my "new" art? Now I want to paint the walls for sure. I have the color picked out and everything.
